Savoy Songbook Vol. 1 serves as an introduction to the band outside Norway. The band recorded new versions of songs from previous albums, as well as three brand new songs, to create Songbook. Originally released in Norway on August 6, 2007, Savoy Songbook, Vol. 1 was released in the on May 5. It became Savoy's first release in the UK since "Mary is Coming" in 1996.

Savoy have now compiled the best of what they’ve got on Savoy Songbook – twenty three shimmering pop songs excavated from their twelve years together. But where a lot of bands would be content to follow convention and leave well enough alone, Savoy again decided to make things more interesting for themselves – and for their audience. "Whenever you listen to your old stuff, there are always things you wish you could have done differently," offers Lauren by way of explaining the band’s approach to Savoy Songbook, where the band set out to rerecord their favorite songs so far.

"The obvious way of doing something like this, is to just take the songs that were singles and leave it at that," says Paul. "But then you remember how arbitrarily the singles were picked in the first place. So instead we went through everything, and tried to find out what worked and what didn’t." From an initial list of around 15 songs, Savoy managed to get 7 new takes on their songs, leaving the rest of the record to the not-too-shabby category of things that could not be improved upon.

Savoy Songbook closes the door on all the other doors that opened up all those years ago, allowing the band to look back and start anew at the same time.
